Cohort Entry

At Knights Stream School we are committed to ensuring all children experience a positive transition to school. For this reason, we have adopted the cohort entry approach for new entrant students.

Transition visits take place on a Tuesday, and the dates and times of these visits will be communicated with you. We also facilitate a parent information session during the first transition visit. We strongly encourage your attendance at this information session.

Cohort entry is when new entrants start school in groups throughout the year rather than on their fifth birthday.

New entrants start school in cohorts but only after they have turned five. Knights Stream School has two entry points per term, one on the first day of each term, and one at a mid-point during each term.

FAQ

Cohort entry is about helping children to settle better in school. There is evidence that starting school alongside other children helps them build relationships and supports a smoother entry to school life.

We believe cohort entry offers children the best start to their school life. It can also mean less disruption for new entrant teachers who can prepare for groups of children arriving on a specific date rather than on an individual and ad hoc basis through the year.

The Education Review Office (ERO) has published an article called Starting School Together: What Do We Know? You can access and read the full article here.

Unfortunately not, children in Aotearoa New Zealand cannot start school until they turn 5.

No, children can remain at their ECE after their fifth birthday until the cohort entry date and they will continue to receive funding to attend ECE until they start school.

It is important to communicate with your early learning service so they know the school enrolment date. Please refer to the cohort entry dates.

New entrants who start school in Term 1 (both start or mid-point entry) and the start of Term 2 will be classified as Year 1 students for the year. Those starting at the mid-point of Term 2 and beyond will be classified as Year 0.

Our fabulous team of new entrant teachers are supportive and experienced at transitioning students to school. Our purpose built learning spaces are welcoming and inclusive. Starting school is an exciting and important step in your child’s life, but we understand it can be overwhelming for them and for you. It is important you try to relax and enjoy this time with your child. When you feel calm and show you are comfortable about your child starting school, they will feel happier too. While there is no set list of what your child should be able to do when they start school, we have compiled information on some key skills and attitudes for starting school, and some suggestions for ways you can help your child prepare for school.
